What is it like to live in Lismore or Grafton, NSW?
Main Post:
Hi, wanting to hear what folks like and dislike about living in either Lismore or Grafton, northern NSW. In particular I'm wondering about summers there - from what I can gather it gets quite humid as well as hot. Is it still enjoyable though or is it nearing unbearable? I have looked at online data from last few years of averages, highs, lows, etc but wanted an account from individuals. I'm looking to move around there in the next 2 years. I'd love to go somewhere smaller and higher altitude however I'm needing to stick around cities due to work in NSW Health Admin so will be applying to hospitals - If I can't find something new to venture into.
Thank you, and if this doesn't belong in this sub or if there's a more appropriate sub please let me know
Top Comment: Both get 40+ days in summer, Grafton has more pubs.

I don’t think I expected it to be that much of a wash. What many expected was going to be a really tight contest has just been a complete and utter wash for the Labor party again. That demographic cliff for the Libs is setting in hard. The Liberals should still win the Aston by election, but man, if they don’t Dutton is sooooo done.
I live in NSW, Australia and want to become a full time firefighter with Fire and Rescue. Can any experienced firefighters give me some advice?
Main Post:
I am 27 and have for some time now been interested in becoming a firefighter. I want a career where I am able to help people. I have not previously volunteered at a fire station but would gladly do so immediately. I will be expressing this at my local fire station this weekend. I have undertaken courses in Emergency Management and Senior First Aid. I am working on my physical fitness and strength to pass the physical test. I currently wear glasses but am looking into laser eye surgery. I have a clean driving record and no criminal convictions.
Am I too old to be considering this? What should I be doing other than learning as much about fire safety and training physically to increase my chances of successfully becoming a firefighter? Any advice that you found useful when training is greatly appreciated.
Top Comment: Hi. Volunteering won't help you get in. The last intake we had was 7500 applicants. 7050 of those were civilians, 450 of those were retained 'part time' firefighters from the same service. Each year we take a certain percentage of retained guys, along with the rest of it made up of civilians. You've just missed an intake, literally by a few weeks and I can't tell you when the next one will be. Read all the guides on the website (fire.nsw.gov.au). They will answer all your questions about training, eyes, crim history, etc. You're not too old, but it's not about that. The battle is getting past the insanely stupid aptitude testing. The process is : Apply online by filling out a few 'about me' forms. List if you are already a part time (retained FF) Complete online test 1 (Isometric / mechanical reasoning) Complete online test 2 (OH&S and moral testing) Invite to test 3 if you passed the first two. Complete online test 3 (Emotional reasoning) Invite to proceed to the rest of the stuff. Interview, then PAT test. PAT test info is all on the website, what it is, how to train for it, etc. The only advice I have - is keep trying. NO one gets in first go. I've known guys who have applied 4 and 5 times before getting in. I know guys who are out standing retained firies, but can't get a crack at the full time positions. Are you in an area where there is a retained station? That is the ONLY way to better your chances.
PSA. If you live in NSW, do NOT purchase a vehicle interstate described as a repairable write-off.
Main Post:
At the moment, there are a heap of people purchasing written off hail damaged vehicles in Qld auctions or from private buyers that were purchased from auctions and are onselling to the unsuspecting. THESE VEHICLES CANNOT BE REGISTERED IN NSW, even if they are classified as repairable write-offs in Qld.
The reason these vehicles are so cheap despite the seeming lack of damage (apart from the hail damage), is that they are unable to be registered in NSW. You should also be aware that if you do register the vehicle in Qld for the required year, you could be liable for fines for not registering the vehicle at your garaging address should the police check your registration against your licence.
RMS gives details here, and more info at REVS.
Please do not purchase these vehicles as a private buyer unless you are willing to go through the huge process - and do a written off vehicle check BEFORE purchasing an interstate vehicle if you live in NSW.

I'm listening to Perrottet's interview with Ben Fordham at the moment. Lets just saying he isn't covering himself in glory.
He keeps saying: I'm not getting into private discussions. (re: David Elliot)
He is a minister of the crown talking to another minster of the crown about using tax payer money to further a colleagues career after they have resigned / decided not to stand for re-election. How is that not directly relevant and should be disclosed to the people of this state when asked about?
It's bizarre to me that the govt continues to ignore the issue at hand. It's the perception that it's just job-for-the-boys(girls) central at Macquarie street.
About Barilaro. I very much doubt there will be much to come out of today. However that won't stop me from watching it.
